Hornets Honor African American History Month with Campus Events
Fullerton College will honor African American History Month in February with a series of campus-wide events designed to inspire, educate and encourage students to take active roles in their communities while reflecting on the rich history and contributions of African Americans.
African American History Month events are hosted by multiple departments on campus including the Cadena Cultural Center, Associated Students, Umoja, Ethnic Studies, and the Fine Arts division.
Feb. 1 – Opening Reception for V!sual Resistance
The Fullerton College Art Gallery begins its new series of exhibits for the spring semester with V!sual Resistance. The exhibit offers viewpoints on social justice, politics and more by four artists: April Bey, Gomez Bueno, Dwora Fried and Narsiso Martinez. An opening reception will be Thursday, Feb. 1 at 5 p.m. in the gallery located in Building 1000, Room 1004. The exhibit will also be a stop on the Fullerton Art Walk on Friday, Feb. 2 from 6-8 p.m. During the Art Walk, students and guests alike are invited to participate in an activist poster project outside the gallery and draw with other artists for free with EASL’s Costume Figure Drawing Workshop with live figure models in Building 1000, Room 1020. Feb. 13 – CommUNITY Day
In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King’s call for community service, CommUNITY Day brings together clubs, programs, services, and local organizations to emphasize the importance of “community” and “unity.” The event will be held on the Quad from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will feature art, music, and a resource fair for students to connect with service opportunities available through several local non-profit organizations in the community. Feb. 21 – African American Forum
The African American Forum returns for the fourth year in a row on Feb. 21 at 12– 2 p.m. in Building 200, Room 224. This engaging event invites students and the campus community to hear from guest speakers, engage in group discussions, and honor African American history. Feb. 27 – Beat Café and Open Mic
The Beat Café Open Mic Night returns to the Student Center in Building 200, Room 214 on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 4 – 7 p.m. This popular event features performances by Fullerton College poets, singers, and musicians in a small and intimate setting.
Lastly, the Cadena Cultural Center will take students on a tour to the California African American Museum and Watts Towers on Friday, March 9. For more information or to sign up for the tour, contact 714-992-7086.
