Shusenjo Film Screening Confronts Controversial Issue of Comfort Women in Japan

The “comfort women” issue is perhaps Japan’s most contentious present-day diplomatic quandary. Inside Japan, the issue is dividing the country across clear ideological lines.

In Shusenjo: The Main Battleground of the Comfort Women Issue, director Miki Dezaki delves deep into the most contentious debates and uncovers the hidden intentions of the supporters and detractors of comfort women who are caught in a relentless battle over empirical evidence, the validity of oral testimony, the number of victims, the meaning of sexual slavery, and the definition of coercive recruitment.

A film screening and Q & A with the director will be hosted by the Social Sciences Division on Friday, March 27 at 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Room 1440.
