Journalism Students Win 13 Awards at JACC Regional Conference
The student staffs of spring editions of The Hornet and Inside Fullerton magazine walked away with a number of awards this past weekend at the annual Journalism Association of Community Colleges’ Regional Conference. Five students attended the conference which included a variety of workshops by industry professionals as well as some on-the-spot competitions.
“It’s great to see our students’ hard work recognized,” said Jay Seidel, coordinator of the Journalism Department. “It’s especially true for the determination and commitment that the Hornet and Inside Fullerton staffs had putting out their content during a crazy spring semester.”
“It was a tough transition to online, but the students found workarounds to still cover important issues and produce high quality publications,” said Jessica Langlois, journalism professor. “They’re doing exactly what professional journalists are doing.”
Students working on the award-winning student publications come not just from the Journalism Department, but the Photography and Digital Arts Departments as well. The students assign, produce, design and edit all the content themselves.
“They all bring their skills and work together to create amazing student-produced content,” Seidel added.
Annisa Charles took third place for opinion writing and Angela Gonzalez took honorable mention recognition for copyediting in the on-the-spot competitions.
“Annisa wrote an opinion piece on social media in three hours, and Angela answered 100 questions about grammar and current events in one hour,” Langlois said. “They had the guts to compete, and it paid off.”
